- You also need AC: one system replaces both the furnace and the air conditioner, and modern cold-climate units heat confidently well below 0°F.
- Your state pays for it: heat pump rebates are the largest in home energy — programs have covered thousands of dollars, specifically to get homes off fossil heat.
Where a high-efficiency furnace still makes sense
- Cheap natural gas + expensive electricity: in some markets, a 96%+ AFUE condensing furnace is the lowest-operating-cost heat.
- Your AC is newer but your furnace is dying: a furnace swap alone can be the right surgical fix.

For many homes in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and the colder Northeast, the winning design is both: a heat pump handles 80–90% of the season at the lowest cost per unit of heat, and a high-efficiency furnace takes over automatically only on the coldest stretches.
